1/24 Monogram 1995 Ford Mustang GT Slot Car Project How-To

This slot car project details the process of taking the model kit of a 1/25 scale 1995 Mustang GT by Revell-Monogram and converting it into a slot car for use on most home 1/24 scale slot car tracks such as Carrera Exclusiv, Sears / Marx, and many others.

These projects give you the realism for your slot car racing without having you spend a ton of money to buy an original vintage slot car. Read below to see what's involved.

NOTE: If you are under the age of 18, please have an adult or parent/guardian help you with this conversion project. Do not try it yourself. This is best done with safety in mine first, so take your time and have fun :)

Materials Needed:

Revell-Monogram 1994 (molded in yellow) or 1995 Mustang GT 1/25 model kit #2697 (molded in blue)
Parma #577 FCR 4 inch wheelbase chassis
Standard 3/16" Jet Guide Flag with nut and braid (REHco #4053 or from Parma, Champion, etc.)
American Line #1102 American Line - 3/16 Guide Washers
Pla-Fit Cheetah Mabuchi Motor #8631 or similar motor such as Fox, Rabbit, or Cartrix brands
Parma #484 Allen Head Motor Screw
Parma (Cox) 35tooth Crown Gear and 8tooth Pinion Gear
Rear Pro-Track #320s or American Line Coated Silicones #1063D
Front Cox Firestones Vintage 1/32 Tires on 1/24 Aluminum wheels from Parts Bin, substitute #319s from Pro-Track or #1075 from American Line
REHco Nylon Spacers #7620 - 1 package
Two-Sided Sticky Velcro Strips for each side of the body
2 3/4" Threaded 5-40 Axles REH #7100 - 2 needed or substitute drill blank 1/8" units from Parma #639 or #640 if using set-screw type wheels

Tools Required for Building:

.050" hex wrench
.064" hex wrench
small pliers
scissors
standard X-acto knife
slotted screwdriver

sandpaper
glue for styrene plastic
socket for guide flag nut
gear press
paint for model body (optional)

Get Started on the Chassis:

There is nothing frustrating to us who like to tinker with model kits and converting them into slot cars then trying to find the right chassis. If there was an easier way out, life would be more simpler. Anyway, we are lucky that Parma released their 4 and 4.5 inch brass chassis. Without out these, you would need a ton more work to get their 1/24 commercial style chassis to fit. The FCR is thought of as a bigger 1/24 scale version of the 1/32 "type" not "scale" Womp Womp chassis. The 4 inch version as noted by our FCR guide fits these model kits almost like a glove.

Here on this body I painted the front amber turn-signals and left the rest of the body as-is as seen in the photo at the beginning of this article. Some bodies need more painting then others but the fun is in building these creatures for your 1/24 scale slot car track like Carrera and others.
