KEN MARX'S TRACKS
Be advised, the information on this page is not current and kept for informational purposes only.
|
| These are my main slot car track layouts that I currently have in my possession and
use for racing. You can still purchase these yourself. Take a look at my
Tomy 2 lane HO layout with an intersection
and the Carrera 2 lane 1/24 scale road course. My racing section lists some details about my home club racing series that I am currently running on the Carrera track layout if you are in the Eastern PA area. |
|
The layouts sit on three tables which measure out to 8 feet wide and 16 feet long. |
A look down the track. Both of these tracks run counter-clockwise. |
Here's the shorter end of the course. This end is 6 feet wide. Pretty easy to navigate except for the start of the turn. |
| The Carrera
1/24 Road Course has about a 40 foot lap length. It takes up
roughly a bit more room than the old Riggen 1/32 set-up. The Tomy
HO course was lengthened a bit and is 2 lanes with an intersection added
for something different. I haven't measure out the lap length yet.
Both of these tracks use the TrakMate Lap Counter system with Infra-Red light sensors to count the cars. The desk lamp you see marks where the start-finish line is for each of the layouts. I plan to paint them on at a later date... |
Another view of the short end of the course. I made some of the track borders for the 1/24 course thus the different color. |
This view shows the long straights of the two tracks. This is where you get to open them up and see what your slot car can do. |
|
The wider end of the course at 8 feet. The turns get a little tricky here but that's what makes racing fun!!! The HO layout has some 6 inch turns and the 1/24 layout has the 1/30 Carrera turns with some small straights added to lengthen the 180 degree turn. |
To keep the cars on the track for the long straight, I added some extra clear styrene sheet extensions for overzealous lead foots!!!l |
The intersection in the Tomy HO layout makes for some interesting racing especially when running Model Motoring cars :) |
|
1/24 Scale 2 - Lane 40+ Lap Length
|
The layout was 14 feet by 8 feet at it's maximum dimensions. The track was made in the 1960s and is one of the few true 1/24 scale home tracks made (the guide slot is deep enough so you are able to run commercial guide flags from Parma without cutting them down.) Expect to pay $150 or more for a decent set with two cars. While a little hard to find, they are still out there. Remember that Marx also made 1/32 slot car track which used a totally different pickup and guide system so stay away from that track. The rails are similar to HO slot car track and they are farther apart. The 1/24 scale track was mostly sold under the Sears name with the Marx logo underneath the track pieces.
For many years I had a Tyco HO 2 lane course on a 4x8 table. Others included: Tyco TCR slotless layout, Marchon MR-1 Monster Truck racing, Marx 1/32 and 1/24 layouts combined on a 14 x 8 layout, Bachmann / Strombecker 1/32, Marx 1/32 and Tyco HO, Aurora AFX, Ideal TCR, Ideal Slotted, and many more but not all at the same time :)
