Test Drive Observations:
The GBtrack name might confuse you in thinking that they have a track range out for 1/32 scale. Think of these GBtrack slot cars from FLY but under a different name similar to what GM does with their automobiles like the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird. Both of those cars are exactly the same underneath with a slightly different body but share most of their parts except for name badges, trim panels, etc. So this is not really surprising to see a similar arrangement that FLY is using for their cheaper GBtrack line, cheaper does not always mean less quality.
This Porsche 917 Spyder body is well detailed by FLY under the GBtrack name and includes detailed markings and great overall quality. These would really stand out if they would do some muscle cars or street cars. Imagine the possibilities if they would consider doing cars for the 1/24 scale Carrera track :) We have on this Porsche everything done including a driver figure and cockpit with gauges. Another good effort.
Getting down to the sidewinder arrangement on the chassis part, we see here the resemblance to FLY. This is what FLY uses such as the FLY Classic Porsche 908/3 Gulf #12 car that I reviewed previously. We get that strong neodymium traction magnet, Mabuchi S motor, and those wide treaded tires for extra traction. This also has the same detailing similar to the Porsche 908/3 such as the spare tire, rear brake lights, chassis bars, etc.
I figured this car would probably behave about the same as the FLY Classic Porsche 908/3 that I tested. This car performed about the same but had some slight handling differences. The car holds the track well with it's tires and neodymium magnet but when trying to push this sports car you will get oversteer and fishtailing causing the car to deslot. This car allows you a very small margin to slide the back end around the turns or when powering down the straights but once you get out of control there is no coming back. This isn't really a problem but a purist looking for pure speed and perfect handling will not find this here but they will find a nice driving experience and decent power / speed. The car powers down the straights good and takes most of the turns as long as you keep the tires clean. I think GBtrack aka FLY would do better if they skip the realistic tread tires or design a better compound for added traction.
I am giving this car a 4 out of 5 tires rating because of the high quality from FLY for this new GBtrack range and for using a good / proven chassis design from their FLY line-up. I would have liked to see a better kind of tires on these cars and the details on the body is up there like FLY so these are good cars for the money. You will save a bit on the GBtrack line compared to the FLY ones but they are similar in quality and workmanship. These are similar to buying a Ford Crown Victoria compared to the Lincoln Town Car. Same car underneath but different body, interior :) Let's hope some of the future releases come to market such as the Racing Tractor Trailer Semis, etc.
Slot Car Garage Review Rating: 4 out of 5 tires!!!
