MRRC 1/32 Shelby
Cobra "Blue" slot car
Overall Rating:

Third times a charm? ReproTec was first, Ninco was second, and now MRRC is the third manufacturer to come out with a Cobra!!! |
These reviews are done on my custom Carrera 1/24 Exclusiv road course layout.

Test Drive Observations:
First off - WOW!!! This car is awesome and I am glad that MRRC took the time to release this car. People have been waiting for the Cobra to come out in 1/32 scale. Some of them used the Monogram Snap-Tite 1/32 Shelby Cobra kit and put their own scratch-built and production chassis under it. So like I think many should do, MRRC took the Revell-Monogram 1/32 Shelby Cobra 427 model kit body mold and adapted it for their own use as a slot car. This results in a very well executed piece.
The chassis itself is common MRRC design in plastic but features a front mounted engine and a rear drive shaft. The interior is a full tub type and they did a great job on it. The driver figure is realistic but I would have liked the guy to have a cowboy hat on and look like Caroll Shelby :) my own opinion...the body is sharply detailed with chrome parts galore. MRRC took the time to have the parts from the Monogram kit chrome plated and they did a good job at it. For many out there that haven't had a chance to look at the model kit (discontinued), it is a snap-tite kit with the body molded in a plain light blue with black parts and no chrome pieces with stickers for the decals. MRRC took the time to mold their version of the body in a deep metallic blue color! (please note that the body is not interchangeable with the model kit.) They have every little detail on this car down to the turn signals and brake lights painted, COBRA printed on the license plate, detailed and painted driver, and clearly printed markings.
So I expected some performance out of this car since it was similar in design to the MRRC Chaparral 1/32 car. They do share the wheels and tires which look more appropriate for this car. The car again has that awesome stance and powerful traction magnet. The car is great around the track. It holds the course very well and you can drive it very easily without much tipping over or sliding. It does slide a bit when you get out of hand with it but it is easy to drive. I would even recommend it to the newbies out there looking for a decent 1/32 vintage type slot car. It is 100% better than the Ninco version. The Ninco was all over the track but the MRRC Cobra is one with the track. The car is easy to control and takes the power to the track when flooring it at the beginning of my long straight. It will crash when pushed to the limits around sharp curves but brakes well and handles the track flawlessly like a good little car should do. I would like to add that the car when it does crash tends to only flip over smoothly and not abruptly.
I can't find nothing wrong about this car and I give it a highly recommend Slot Car Garage best buy rating of 5 out of 5 tires!!! This slot car will make a great addition to anyone's slot car collection. It features awesome detailing, great handling / powerful chassis, and a decent price! MRRC did a great job converting the Monogram 1/32 model kit body to slot car use. I hope they keep on the same track and release some more slot cars this way. They could keep in contact with Revell-Monogram and do some new molds as well. RVM can release a snap-tite 1/32 model kit and MRRC would use the same body for a slot car version in a different color with added detail. Keep up the good work MRRC!!! :)
Slot Car Garage Review Rating: 5 out of 5 tires!!!
