Overall Rating:

The earlier versions that Scalextric did of the Opel Calibra weren't as detailed as the Ninco ones but their new one reviewd here has many things going for it including detailed drilled brake rotors, new chassis design, etc. |
These reviews are done on my custom Carrera 1/24 Exclusiv road course layout.

If you recall some time ago, Scalextric had a cheaper line of 1/32 slot cars on the market with thin tires, blacked out windows, no interiors, etc. The Opel Calibra was one of them that they did. The car ran ok but it wasn't a speed demon. When you compared the two Opel Calibras from Scalextric and Ninco from back then, you can tell that the Ninco was the better one with more detail, interior, better chassis, etc. Now forward to 2001, you have many more companies in the 1/32 slot car market with high detail such as FLY. This new Scalextric Opel V8 Coupe has fantastic detailing including drilled brake rotors and nicely printed markings on the body.
Taking a look at the chassis, they used a sidewinder design this time around like some of their newer cars. This design includes a nicely done set-up with traction magnet and slick tires. The only problem with the cars from Scalextric are their shallow guide flag design for their own track so when using it on other tracks you run into problems of it jumping out of the slot and you can only slide it so far in the slot.
This 1/32 slot car has good average speed for the Mabuchi S motor and the car handles pretty good for the design. The slicks and magnet holds to the track pretty good without much fish tailing but you do have to take it easy around the curves and be sure to stop in time after speeding down your straights since it likes to jump out of the slot and does not have the strong braking like the FLY cars do.
Overall I am giving this new slot car from Scalextric a 4 out of 5 rating. I am giving it this since it has very nicely done FLY-like detaling and quality on the body, a good thought out chassis design, good handling but the only problem lies with the shallow guide flag system they use and the limit of travel it has. I should note that the guide system is perfect for their own track system but not the best if you wish to use it for other tracks like Carrera which is made for a much wider and deeper guide flag but you can still use it without much trouble. A recommended slot car.
