FLY 1/32 Corvette C5R #2

Everyone waited a long, long time for this one to be released from FLY.  We were expecting something good but the wait was worth it.  We congratulate FLY for doing a 2001 version of the Corvette C5R as well.

These reviews are done on my custom Carrera 1/24 Exclusiv road course layout.

Test Drive Observations:

Well the wait is over, finally!  FLY has releases their Corvette C5-R 1/32 slot car.  Many of us were on pins and needles for the longest time waiting for this one when it was announced last year as a new release from FLY for 2001.  This one was anticipated to be the best detailed FLY slot car to be released so far.  Most of their cars are agile runners as well.  I have to congratulate FLY on this one because of their delays to release the new 2001 Daytona car instead of giving us an older 2000 year paint scheme or body.  This was the car that won the 2001 Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona.

When you take a look at this one and all it's detail, you just have to say wow!  The exterior has tons of clear markings and details.  There's nicely done front running lights, roof radio antenna, and all that fun stuff.  I took a look at some photos of the car I found online from and the body matches up to it the best they could for a 1/32 slot car.  This one looks great even as a display piece.  You can see the various hoses, rear axle detail, and roll bars, etc. through the rear window hatch.  Taking a look at the interior, you will find a nicely done driver figure, outstanding detail such as roll bars, wiring, air hoses, fire extinguisher, etc.  A nice interior and looks like something out of a larger scale model kit.  High points here for FLY on the body and interior, no flaws.

Now, let's get to the chassis.  The chassis design is reminiscent of the FLY Viper and Marcos.  Front engine, driveshaft to rear axle/crown gear assembly.  This design allowed for all that detail in the interior and to allow for a more realistic design as compared to other slot cars.  We get the usual rear mounted traction magnet and the wide slick tires as common on other FLY slot cars.  These tires have Good Year Eagle markings to represent how the car ran at Daytona.  Taking some trial runs of the car around my Carrera layout gave me the feel of the car.  The magnet does keep it planted on the ground and the car is not floating on the track as some of them are like Carrera 1/32 ones.  This one hugs the ground and is ready for some all out speed down the track.  The car keeps itself planted around most of the course and along the curves.  The only times you will find it giving way is if you floor the throttle while going down the straight or taking it too fast around the turns.  This one with the front mounted engine causes it to fishtail a bit once the magnet looses cohesion with the track rails but the slicks do help in keeping it going.  Once the tires get a little dirty from running, you will get some fishtailing but if you gently apply the throttle and watch the turns, this shouldn't be a problem.  Some amount of oversteer or fish tailing but nothing major.  Love the handling and the car itself.  Probably with some fine tuning and silicone tires, this one would fly - no pun intended.  As is, its still a fast car with good enough handling.

To wrap things up, I am giving this car a Slot Car Garage Best Buy rating with five out of five tires.  The detail on the body and interior is outstanding and of high quality.  The chassis handles great without much fuss and has good a power band.  A well executed slot car from FLY this time around and beats the detail from any other 1/32 slot car released.  Well worth the money.  They could have raised the price up to their limited edition status but this way anyone buying other FLY cars can buy this one as well without going broke.  Good job, now if you would only do some muscle cars :)
