Test Drive Observations:

Carrera is hot for 2000!!!  They were the first ones to take the plunge and produce some 1/32 muscle cars for the 1/32 slot car market.  Their new line-up insides some nice 1/32 and 1/24 scale slot cars.  They have a new distributor for the US so hopefully more people will be able to enjoy these cars and sets.  The prices on these 1/32 scale Carrera slot cars is one of the reasons why you should buy one.  Around $30.00 retail price?  You must be kidding - It's true!!!  For this reason only, you must grab one of these.

The 1965 Ford Mustang was a subject that they did back in the 1960s as a 1/32 slot car from Aurora / K&B (talking big bucks even for a used one).  You can find the discontinued model kit version around under the Monogram banner after they bought the Aurora molds but it comes without the slot car interior.  Monogram took the basic model kit version and added some GT-350 decals similar to this car.  The body is about the same when comparing the two but this one from Carrera is all new and matches the real Mustang GT-350 pretty closely.  You would spend more money buying the Monogram model kit and converting it over than buying this ready to run slot car.

The body itself is highly detailed with nice chrome and detailing.  We get a cool looking driver figure without a helmet (yes!) and sunglasses.  He is ready to burn some rubber with the powerful Ford V8 engine.  They used the same guy for both of the street cars but hey we can tolerate that.  The interior plate isn't that detailed as something from FLY but it still works - remember its a slot car not a model kit - it still looks good.  The lights are painted front and rear, with PNY XPRS for the license plate.  The dimensions look good and I congratulate Carrera for doing a nice job on it.

I was surprised with the ease of driving it on the track.  The car has a slightly longer wheelbase than the 1967 Corvette so it takes the curves a little better and doesn't have the tendency to flip over as much.  The Mustang has a bit of oversteer (fishtailing) when flooring it but the car stays in the track slot.  You can slide the car a bit through the curve without getting too much out of control.  Overall, I really like it.  It's not a very fast "magnet" car but still fun to drive.  There is still that likelihood you can flip the car but not as much as the Mercedes 300 SLR.  It drives much better than that one.

Overall, I couldn't really find anything wrong with the car.  Maybe a little faster but still a great car overall.  If you compare the two times between the Corvette and Mustang, you will find the two are about equal.  You must get one of these.  I hope Carrera comes out with some more muscle cars - maybe even some for 1/24 scale :)  This car gets the SCG Pick of the Year for 1/32 Scale.
