Test Drive Observations:
First I would like to say that this is one of the nicest cars FLY has done for their Classic line so far. The car is finished in dark blue with SUNOCO #9 markings and sharp gold pin-striping. There is excellent detail inside and out on this car. They even took the time to create a complete replica of a spare tire in the rear part of the car with hub! The wheels are sharp looking units with blue line tires. One of the best jobs out there.
Taking the car out on the track, I expected some sliding and handling problems but the magnet cures this. The car has a nice traction magnet that keeps it planted to the track but does not bog it down. The FLY Mabuchi S motor gives enough horsepower to get this puppy down the straights but you need to leave off a bit more sooner than other FLY magnet cars like the Viper when reaching the curves or you get into trouble quickly. I got used to the braking on this car after a couple of laps. The sidewinder chassis set-up helps to keep the noise down and the gears running smooth.
Handling on the car is reasonable with it's wide rubber tires on the rear wheels with simulated tread design. I would like to have seen some silicone type tires on it but I think the aftermarket will come out with some. This will definitely improve the handling and overall speed of the car. The car does not fish tail much around the course but it does have a breaking point where it will leave the track due to the magnet losing it's adhesion with the track rails. I really love that the car allows you to drive it around the course without having the hassle of pushing it due to the force of the magnet or having the car fish-trailing around the place.
Overall this is an excellent car from FLY. I would like to see some more cars like this in the future. I bet many people will fall in love with this baby. It does need some improvement in the motor and handling department. I wish FLY would get a faster version of the Mabuchi motor and use some stickier tires on the rear. The detail is outstanding on the car and it drives quite nicely. Purchase one today for your collection. Now I wonder if FLY will also give us a Cobra? I doubt it :) Maybe something else the vintage racers are after. FLY could have worked out a little bit better traction magnet system to give the car some better braking and added a set of silicone type tires. So this car gets a highly recommended rating of 4 out of 5 tires.
