SCX takes a stab at doing the Cadillac LMP in 1/32 scale along with Scalextric but does their version prove worthy to buy?

Test Drive Observations:

I picked up this SCX Techni-Toys version of the Cadillac LMP to see how it compares to the 1/32 Scalextric version which I reviewed previously.  For the slightly cheaper price tag compared to the Scalextric version, I wasn't expecting the highly detailed body and wheels such as the Scalextric versions has nor the drilled out brake rotors.  This body is nicely detailed and looks good with clearly printed markings for SCX but doesn't match the crispness the Scalextric one has.  The body is ok for SCX but no show winner here.  It is not as nicely done as the previously made SCX Ferrari 333SPs.  Even though it is licensed by Cadillac and GM for SCX, we are missing the trademark crest on the front grille area.  There is only a blank emblem there, no detail.  This is a must for the car and it showed itself out right in any photos of the car.  You get a flat blank plate for the interior with SCX markings.  The driver is trademark SCX with a simple windscreen and steering wheel hump.  This body can pass for a 1/32 slot car racer but if you are looking for detail, go with Scalextric.  If you only want something that looks similar to the Cadillac LMP car, you can get by with this but if you want to see the Cadillac Crest - this will disappoint you.

Moving onto the chassis, we see classic SCX here.  A flat pan chassis with a bar magnet in the rear for traction and the standard fare 13D style and size SCX motor.  I was hoping they would include slicks here for the tires like FLY but we get treaded tires instead.  They are using up their stock but here is a place we should have slicks for better traction.  You can get aftermarket silicones but it's not the same.  The chassis performs adequately but not up to the point of pure speed like the Scalextric one.  It will bog down a bit and bounce around with the lopsided tires and very tight drive train.

The car isn't that hard to drive but it likes to fishtail when pushed and jumps around the place a little too much for my taste.  The motor isn't that powerful for getting torque through the chassis to the roadway for motivation.  Here is another area, I would give extra money to for the Scalextric version over this one.

Overall I am only giving it 2 1/2 out of 5 tires because of the poorly designed way SCX went around designing this one.  I can see using the same motor and design like the previous cars but the tires should be slicks and there should have been a bit more detailed body along with a better handling body.  Better luck next time SCX.
