Test Drive Observations:

Since Carrera got a better distributor for the US, we are seeing more tracks out there and more people buying Carrera brand slot cars.  Carrera is also releasing some nice new cars and they are keeping up the tradition for 2001.  This new Aston Martin DB3 they did is a really neat vintage style slot car.  Looking at the body, you will see that it has a nicely done metallic light green finish with round gum balls and #611.  The interior has two nicely done figures one driving and the other one holding a map.  Both of them look to me to be done correctly for that time people.  Each one is has a different color racing outfit on which makes them stand apart plus the interior has nicely done gauges, wheel, shifter, etc. for a slot car.  Good job here.

Now onto the chassis and handling part of the slot car.  They are using their new gear drive system they started with in 2000 and the sliding magnet.  This time around to make a realistic interior instead of using a flat plate, they moved the motor up front and has a shaft going back driving the rear wheels.  This set-up is good and does not make as much noise as a FLY Viper does with it's system.  Carrera cars are on the quiet side for the most part.  You also get their wide guide flag with lots of free movement for sliding around and going around the course.  This is one of the better guide flag systems out there along with the wider 1/32 Artin one and others.  It is deep and allows for the car to slide without forcing it to jump out of the slot too much.  The standard Mabuchi S motor has good enough speed and power for this slot car.

Putting it on the track for testing I figured it would handle about the same as the other Carrera cars.  This slot car does have the tendency to slide a bit around the curves with the fish tail movement but it's not too bad.  You can get used to it.  When comparing it to other vintage style Carrera cars, it has slightly better handling and speed possibly due to the longer wheelbase and motor position.  I really got used to this car quickly so you will not find it hard to get a groove and drive.  I did have it jump out of the slot now and then when trying to push it hard but overall it is a neat little vintage style slot car for your 1/32 or 1/24 slot car track.

I am giving this one a 4 out of 5 rating since it has a good all around power and handling.  It's not the best rating but it is one of those cars you should buy if you are into vintage style slot cars.  You won't really be disappointed in the handling department if you have experience driving other Carrera vintage type slot cars.  Good detailing on the body and nice finish, decent handling chassis, makes it a recommended slot car.
